Especially if you dress it up with the pathways you unlock from the Wishing Fountain and the various exterior decorations like plants, seating, playground equipment, and more, there's nothing wrong with staying with the default island layout for a bit. If you're just getting into making Miis for the island, it's a good idea to start small anyway, to help you get the lay of the land.
Jail Beach

Do you have a Mii that just won't freaking stop asking if you'll put a vending machine on the beach, or for a parasol only a grid or two away from the one you just put there yourself? Is someone arguing with your favorite Mii, and you need them to think about what they've done? Make an area of the island for naughty Miis with a tide pool of despair to think about their decisions for a while.
Make a small indented area of the island with a beach below ground level, but neglect to put any stairs leading in, and drop in any Miis that need a time-out. They won't stay there permanently, but it's a fun notion that they're in the penalty box.
It's a good time to feed them any of the spoiled foods, if they're hungry, too.
Solitary Confinement
But what about the times when jail beach just doesn't cut it? What if you made your romantic partner, but things have gone south, and you need a moment before you delete them? What if you have a themed island, and your traditional loner character needs some extra space?
Set off into the water with the ground tool and create a small island far, far off from the main area, unconnected by any land areas or beaches, and move the Mii in question out there. They might occasionally show up on the main island, but we love the thought of leaving them in isolation.
Bustling Boardwalk
While there aren't quite as many playground or amusement park attractions in the game without creative use of the design tools, you can still access plenty of outdoor furniture and wooden pathing to create a boardwalk space of your own. Between the Ferris wheel, the Tomoria restaurant, and all the beachy furniture you can purchase and place, there's plenty of room to get creative.
You could even use the Mii Network News tower to give the vibe of a drop ride, or just to have something else to spruce up the area outside the benches, palm trees, and colored lights. Place colorful banners to welcome guests, and you've got a boardwalk worth visiting.
Suburban Islands
While you'll technically still be called a singular island in the game's eye, there's nothing stopping you from making all kinds of exterior neighborhoods outside of a main town space, to really give the separation of your urban and suburban areas.
Place all of your shops and attactions on the main island with the Fountain, then create exterior islands for all of your Mii homes. Connect them all with small beachy paths, and your Miis will be able to seamlessly travel to and from town. You should leave some green spaces in the suburban areas with trees and plants, and use stone pathing to make a more downtown feel on the island with the shops.
Natural Bridges
You can make independent districts of your island, though, if the notion of beach pathing isn't quite doing it for you! This option provides more of a mixed-use array of spaces for your Miis, with different utility spaces interspersed with homes and shops.
Everything is connected together with thin land bridges, which tend to work best when you leave them at least two spaces wide so your Miis can walk down the center without any crowding issues. You could even pave them over with the pathing tools, too, providing stone or metal bridges for your Miis. Your fanciest Miis could even get a golden flooring bridge, if you're feeling generous!
Dockside Bungalows
This Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream island layout gives such a tropical vibe, placing the Mii houses at the end of wooden docks jutting off into the water from a central dock through the neighborhood. You see this style a lot in Southeast Asia, and some users have even taken things a step further with custom exteriors for the area.

You can carve out a shape around the Fountain space and tastefully use decor and greenery to spruce it up even further. You'll still see plenty of Miis hanging out here, and they'll have such a scenic space to do it - it's especially good for higher-level islands who may not need to access the Fountain for more than regular daily donations.
Seasonal Parks
There are tons of buildings and decorations to be placed in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and the more Miis you make, the quicker your island will begin to crowd, but it's always a good idea to try and leave your Miis some green spaces to enjoy throughout the year, especially making use of the seasonal decor.
Grab the plants, bushes, and flowers you get from the Fountain at any given time of year - the ones you unlock after the MNN Broadcast tells you it's the start of a new season - and redo the green spaces on your island to make them more naturally outdoorsy. Line paths with the seasonal decor like sakura petals or snowy edges, and you'll have an area you can consistently redecorate to keep yourself busy.

Keeping It Tidy
After granting a few wishes, you'll be able to start unlocking all kinds of new pathways from the Island Builder menu at the Wishing Fountain, and it's with these that you'll be able to get creative with the way you pave streets and walking paths on your island, like what you can see above.
The Mii's houses all align with the sidewalks and pathing paved through the area, there are tidy mixed-use neighborhoods with shops and houses alike, and the entire island seems visually in order at all times. Pop down some decorations and fences to keep things linear with your decorations and your island will always look well-organized.
